April 30th ... 1996 that is! Exactly 12 years ago i went to my first so-called "retro" party.
I could be wrong, but wasn't this like the first retro-night ever? The theme of the night was a tribute to the most legendary Belgian club: Boccaccio (which had been closed down in '93) and took place in Cherry Moon. Behind the decks: Olivier Pieters, former resident and producer of the Bocca-anthem "Even Now".
This night was the perfect oppurtunity for me to catch up with the early house and new-beat years i had missed. The atmosphere was amazing that night, and so was the slightly different crowd (a bit older than on a regular Cherry Moon-night).

Ripping this club's tapes was easier than finding it's logo, but after a little dive into my basement i finally completed this post.

For those who don't know the club: the former swimming pool in Waregem first opened as "Carioca". Round '92 it was renamed "Cirao" and made it's way into clubbing history. Most people remember it as a trance-club with residents like Phi-Phi, Fred Nasen, Yves LBQ, Laurent Warin, Nicolas, Philip Traikos.
The line-up also featured international guests like Blake Baxter, Stacey Pullen and some guests from the Amsterdam-scene like 100% Isis, Marcello, ... who added a fair bit of house and techno.

That's right: 1 post, 3 sets ... and since it doesn't always have to be Fuse-recordings here's an old love of mine: At The Villa.
A legendary Belgian club famous for its music, dj's, label and above all its people.
Expect a nice mixture of house, trance and techno in a nye-set + 2 live-sets (lots of cheering, whistling and clapping!). The live-sets are amonst my all-time-favourites ;)

paul van dyk

It's been a while since i posted something for the legendary clubbers, so if you're not into techno, here's your chance to grab something different.
The man with the tie is Paul van Dyk, voted nr.1 dj in the world several times (although nowadays the Dutch alliance is taking over) and you could say he's one of the trance-godfathers.
In 1993 Paul mixed the first edition of X-Mix, an excellent combination of music and graphics (released on cd, vinyl, vhs, dvd ... the vinyls are indisposible in any collection!!).
In 1994 he released his breakthrough-single "Emergency", followed by other successes like For an angel and My World.

In 1998 he made his appearance in Fuse on a friday-night for a trance-special and that was the only time i saw him perform.

The adress of the notorious Fuse-club ... but also the same building that hosts/hosted Mad Club and La Démence.

Underneath are 2 recordings of those concepts.
First is a 75 minutes-Mad Club set, it features resident dj's Yves Deruyter and Rudy. The club used to be open every wednesday -but that seems like ages ago- and was managed by Boterham (slice of bread if you prefer :)
The second set, fortunately is only 35 minutes (short impression), it was recorded in La Démence by resident-dj Elias, as featured in this picture. La Démence is a gay concept, it's still running after all those years (monthly).

Things have been rather calm on the upload-front last week, so i thought i'd make it up with a triple-post:

Set 1 is a repost (back by popular demand):

Set 2 was recorded in Antwerp at the legendary Café d'Anvers in October 1992. The sound is more clubby/housy, after all this is the city where the Wonka-label was founded. I don't have an exact date, or the name of the dj (must be one of the residents at that time: Koenie? Steve Cop? ...) but it's defenitely worth checking out (and the tapequality seems very ok).

Set 3 is a 90 minute-mix recorded in a small local club called Chéops (closed down after a police raid if i remember well). It sets of rather calm in a true sunday-afternoon style, but after about 10 minutes in come the classics. The recording was dated 1991.

Extra set: while i was at it, i also did a new upload on the At The Villa post from some time ago, it's a dj-set by residents Marko & Johan, recorded in 1994 (nice thing about this set is that you actually here the crowd go mentall on the background ... and then there's the music)

extreme mondays ... pas "comme un lundi"

All of my previous posts were Fuse-recordings ... i have quit a few left, but this time i'm posting something from another legendary club: Extreme. Altough ... there's still a connection:
Phi-Phi hosted some nights at the upstairs "BUMP" room in Fuse.

I first heard of him when he was a resident in At the Villa (Kooigem), but many years later Phi Phi is still in high demand, often for so called "retro"-nights.
Almost anyone can play retro-music, but i would advise you to check his progressive sets:
Phi Phi still seems to have kept the track of time very well.

The set underneath was recorded 03.02.98., nearly 10 years ago ... time flies (when you're having fun). Mondaynight session, this means mainly progressive trance.

They even named island after this man :)

dimanche après-midi (when sunday wasn't "lazy sunday")

People change, dj's change. Manu Kenton -former resident at the Belgian LAGOA-club- nowadays plays hardtechno, french-tek and other substyles i'm not interested in.
But in '94 he hosted the popular sunday-afternoons in this club. Because these afternoons attracted a very diverse crowd the music didn't pinpoint to one style. Enjoy a fine mixture of house, techno, trance and some Amsterdam-sounds all in one nice blend + a few forgotten classics to top it off.

welcome ... At The Villa

Does anyone remember radio Galaxie? Does anyone remember At The Villa?
The first one still exists, second one ... unfortunately it doesn't.
During the 90's this radio station did some "live" broadcasts on the club in their "Church" period (for full story, check legendaryclubs).

Follow the link underneath to a 1994 recording, mixed by Marko and Johan, resident dj's at this club (yes, in the early 90's resident dj's made the club, nowadays guest-dj's often do). As mentioned this is a "live" recording, this means you can actually hear the crowd going wild and somehow experience the atmosphere.
The "Galaxie" people were kind enough not to disturb the recording with annoying jingles, thanks for that one.

Did i mention this is my favourite ATV-recording?

Here's a tape I ripped from a legendary Belgian club called "Club 55". The tape was recorded in 1991 and consists out of 2 parts (as most audiotapes do ...).
There are a few tracks who appear in both parts, so I suppose the recording covers 2 different dates. Don't ask me which dj did this mix, it's a f*ckin 1991-tape, people didn't care, and handwriting was yet to be invented.

For all those suckazz talkin' bout so called "nu-rave": have a good listen to the real stuff!!
